Fulfilling Our Nutrition Needs as We Age

Fulfilling Our Nutrition Needs As We Age

Talking about aging with our loved ones can be challenging, but fulfilling our nutrition needs as we age is an essential part of staying healthy and happy. Making sure older adults have access to fresh, nutritious food can bring comfort and security. By understanding what causes food insecurity — which simply means not having enough access to the food we need — you and your loved ones can explore solutions together.

The Healthy People 2030 initiative highlights factors that can contribute to food insecurity, like social isolation, transportation issues, and finding local support. These challenges are real, but they’re also manageable with some planning. Over five million older adults in the U.S. experienced food insecurity in 2021, according to Feeding America, so you’re not alone in addressing this concern.

As you plan, here are some helpful questions to talk through with your loved one:

  • What kinds of food do they like best?
  • Do they feel like they’re getting enough healthy options?
  • How far is the nearest grocery store, and is it easy to get to?
  • Are they comfortable with the amount of food they can access?
  • Are there local resources available to help with grocery and nutrition needs?

If there are gaps, programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) could be helpful. To find more information or locate an Aging and Disability Resource Center, you can check out Find an ADRC or call 855-937-2372.

I guess you can take the girl out of Texas but you can't take Texas out of the girl. I was born here in Dallas and moved away at age 8. After 30 years of moving around the United States, as a child with the family and as an adult without them, I finally found myself back in Dallas. Since I returned in 2001 I have sold furniture for Crate&Barrel and Real Estate with Keller Williams. It is my hope to share with you what I love, question, and find interesting here in DFW.
